Bird Williams and Bigg Robb made a serious marketing mistake when they didn't call this classic-to-be "Pictures On The Phone". It's what you remember! But they came through where it counts. Most of today's young musicians are consistently upbeat. Even King George has steered clear of contentiousness and strife since "Keep On Rollin'". So it's a bit of a wake-up call to hear an authentic "hurtin'" song: tragic, sad---the 21st-century blues at its deepest and darkest. "Pictures On The Phone" reminds us of what we forgot we were missing both psychologically and musically----the cleansing spiritual rejuvenation of the former and the powerful blues tradition of the latter. And it's not easy to do. I recently criticized the awesomely talented Cecily Wilborn for missing the bullseye with "Tell Me What It Is," more angry rant than transformative art. So it's fitting that Bigg Robb (performing featured back-up duties and no doubt producing) is on board for this smashing return to action from the man---Bird Williams---who recorded "Sometimes Man" a half-decade ago. Bigg Robb is one of the few from the Sir Charles (older) generation to be able to do both happy and sad. To do "Wave your hands in the air like you just don't care" and to do Bird's excruciatingly painful...
"Pictures on the phone,
Pictures on the phone,
And they talking to me.
It's reminding me
Of how good my life used to be."
