In Praise of "Carrying On"
Listen to Nephew Jones singing "It's My Type Of Carryin' On" on YouTube.
Born in Charleston, North Carolina, Donn Jones broke into southern soul music with the radio-friendly single "Moonshine In The Trunk" in May of 2023. Raised around his uncles, he took the name "Nephew Jones" for his southern soul pseudonym. The practice of emerging artists calling themselves the "nephews" of established artists (as opposed to just acquaintances, pupils or friends) wasn't uncommon in the chitlin' circuit. and J. Red The Nephew, who began by advertising himself as Theodis Ealey's nephew, had actually been the first to incorporate "nephew" into his stage name. Nephew Jones merely followed suit.
Jones began his music career as a hiphop artist---Donn Jones---in 2017 and amassed a catalog through the late teens and early twenties that still dwarfs his southern soul material. In December of 2023, with little fanfare and "Moonshine" gathering some buzz, Jones released the single that would become his signature song and change his life.
"My Type Of Carrying On" had the dubious distinction of appearing and competing for attention in the biggest time for new talent (2024) in recent southern soul, with young stars like FPJ, 803Fresh, Mike Clark Jr. and Tonio Armani creating such a din of excitement that "My Type Of Carrying On" was to a certain extent overlooked.
2025 was no less challenging, with the quartet (above) Daddy B. Nice had begun calling "the young guns of southern soul" joined by the flashy debuts of E.J. Jones ("Gas Station Love") and Breeze MrDo2Much ("Love Me For Real"), not to mention formidable competition from new female stars Cecily Wilborn and Myia B. Close to two years after its release, nevertheless, Jones' "My Type Of Carrying On" scored a number-ten ranking in Daddy B. Nice's year-end Top 25 Singles of 2025.
Still, the song wasn't done. Relegated to the relative shadows, its popularity continued to climb into 2026, drawing listeners, line-dancers, deejays and pundits as the tune's YouTube streams surged past eight million. By this time Jones had a handful of songs circulating, all differing in styles (see right-hand column of this page for Daddy B. Nice's "recommended singles") but nothing that held a candle to the easy-going standard that "My Type Of Carrying On" was becoming.
Also, over time, the initially more dazzling material of Nephew's peers began to fade with familiarity while the little-engine-that-could hook from "My Type Of Carrying On" expanded to fill the vacuum. The locomoting tempo and the guy-next-door vocal never grew old or tiresome.
Every southern soul fan knows that indescribable high of hearing a song, a hook, a tempo that hits you beneath the waist and launches you from a sitting position to standing up, moving your arms and legs. It could be in a line with others. It could be free-dancing in a sea of others. But the arms and elbows can't resist flailing, the feet can't stop sliding and the hips and knees can't stop bending and twisting. It's what drew all of us to southern soul in the first place. It's music that forces us to dance, one of the miracles of life.
Nephew Jones' "My Type Of Carrying On" is a textbook example.
